Gaspard Yurkievich

Dear Shaded Viewers,

The other day I went to see Gaspard Yurkievich's installation and video at l'Hotel. Today I decided to find out a bit more about Gaspard's shoe obsession.

DP: How did it come about that l'Hotel asked you to collaborate with them and how did it feel being the first fashion designer to show at l'Hotel?
GY: I WAS APPROACHED BY "PARCOURS SAINT GERMAIN" WHICH IS A FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY ART THAT TAKES PLACE IN SHOPS AND RESTARUANTS IN SAINT GERMAIN. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT THEY EVER ASKED A FASHION DESIGNER TO PARTICIPATE. I WAS DREAMING OF DOING SOMETHING IN THE MISTINGUETT ROOM AND ALSO OF MAKING A VIDEO INSPIRED BY A SCENE FROM PABST?S FILM ?LOULOU? STARRING LOUISE BROOKS...

DP: Did you ever sleep in that luxurious bed?
GY: NO BUT SINCE THE EXHIBITION ...AN AMERICAN FRIEND ASKED ME TO BOOK HIM A ROOM AND TO ASK THE MANAGER TO GIVE HIM "A SPECIAL PRICE"...
ACTUALLY I'M PROUDER TO HAVE MADE THE VIDEO AND INSTALLATION IN THIS ROOM THAN TO HAVE SLEPT THERE OR WHATEVER...

DP: Let's talk shoes, you've been designing shoes ever since you were a child, how old were you when you designed your first pair of shoes and what did they look like?
GY:I WAS DESIGNING CARS AND SHOES BUT ONLY IN PROFILE... BUT MORE THAN 20 ON ONE PAGE WITH MANY COLORS.
I WAS VERY YOUNG 5 OR 6, MY OLDER SISTER WAS COLLECTING SHOES AND I WAS FASCINATED BY THIS COLLECTION. I USED TO TRY THEM ON AND COUNT THEM... SHE WAS 16 AND ALREADY HAD MORE THAN 100 PAIRS....

Gaspard_shoes_2Gaspard_shoes_l

DP: How many pairs are around the bed and can you talk a little bit about your favorite ones?
GY: I NEVER COUNTED BUT AROUND 200 I GUESS. THEY ARE ALL SAMPLES FROM MY SHOE COLLECTION FW 2008/2009. MY FAVORITE ONE IS THE YELLOW/GREEN/BLUE DERBY PAIR WITH A HEEL LIKE A CHRISTMAS GLASS BOWL.

DP: What do you owe your shoe obsession to?
GY: MY SISTER?S COLLECTION...AND THE FACT THAT HEELS WERE ONLY FOR GIRLS AND I WAS FEELING UNFAIRLY EXCLUDED WHEN I WAS KID.

DP: How many shoes do you design in a season?
GY: ABOUT 20 STYLES THEN I MAKE VARIATIONS WITH 3 OR 4 DIFFERENT STYLE HEELS IN 2 OR 3 COLORS.
I?VE JUST STARTED DESIGNING MEN'S SHOES...

DP: You directed the film that was showing at the same time as the installation, can you tell me a bit about that and who the actress/singer is and would you call her your muse?
GY: INITIALLY WE HAD TO MAKE THE VIDEO WITH AN ACTRESS. CLOTHILDE HESME AND JOANNA PREISS AGREED WITH THE PROJECT BUT OUR SHOOTING WAS DURING THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL...
THE MUSICIAN AND SINGER DANI SICILIANO ENDED UP PERFORMING IN THE VIDEO AND I CHOSE ONE OF HER SONGS FOR THE PROJECT. SHE'S A VERY CLOSE FRIEND AND SHE WORKED ON THE MUSIC OF OUR SHOW AND EVERY OTHER PROJECT. THE LONG TERM COLLABORATION WITH HER IS AMAZING; IT'S A NON-STOP INSPIRATION.

Gaspard_shoes_4Gaspard_shoes_5

DP: What is next for you?
GY: I'M COORDINATING THE SHOW OF MY STUDENTS FROM L'ENSAD WHERE I HAVE BEEN TEACHING FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS "FONDAMENTAUX DE LA MODE" (!!!!). I'VE BEEN WORKING WITH THEM FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS AND I LOVE THEM ALL AND I'M EXCITED TO SEE THE RESULT AS I AM GOING TO ST...

NEW YORK (AP) – Everybody knows what the Empire State Building looks like. That's why Rick Bell, the head of the Center for Architecture, didn't put the famous skyscraper on his list of 10 great buildings to see in New York.

art.apple.ap.jpg

The Apple store in SoHo is noted for its glass bridge and staircase.

But the list from the Center for Architecture, which is the American Institute for Architects chapter in New York, does include the Condé Nast Building in Times Square, which is considered the first green skyscraper; the Apple store in SoHo, noted for its glass bridge and staircase; and the Seagram Building, the only design in New York by famed architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

If you're an architecture buff, here are some details on why these and seven other buildings should be on your must-see list. All but one are located in Manhattan. While you're in town, you may also want to visit the Center for Architecture at 536 LaGuardia Place.

With individual dental plans, the choice lies between the Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans and the Indemnity Plans. Apart from the cost factor, the major differentiating factor lies in the dentist who can provide you the necessary care. In case of PPO Plans, the patient’s choice of dentist will be restricted to a service provider listed in the plan’s network. Indemnity plans, on the other hand, give patients the freedom of choosing their own dentist. To make an informed choice, people need to study as many quotes as possible, do a comparative study and consider the following the dental plans on the market. All plans are designed to provide dental care at reasonable cost, so selecting any one plan is not a simple task. It is important for people to realize that no plan is perfect. For every head, there is a tail and the same holds true for insurance plans. This means that each plan has its advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, if someone cannot make a perfect choice, they can at least make an informed choice. Another factor to consider is who controls the decision of where the patient can get treatment. Simply stated, in a case of multiple options, most plans are designed in such a way that patients are forced to choose the least expensive one. This means the plan restricts their choice of treatment and going against this would force them to bear the additional expenses. Another important factor to be taken into consideration is whether the plan covers diagnostic, preventive, and emergency services. This is because, though most plans provide for basic services, their extent and frequency may vary. It is simple to get these quotes. There are a number of companies selling dental insurance, and surfing the net will provide an adequate number of choices to study and do a comparative study of the cost and coverage mentioned in the quotes. According to the National Association of Dental Plans (NADP), based in Dallas, about 89% of large employers offer some type of dental plans to their employees as part of their employee benefit scheme. While one may consider it unnecessary to go for a dental plan if there is no history of problems, it is advisable to secure a plan for requirements in the future. Dental discount programs are basically membership-based policies. In exchange for the prescribed fee, the patients get a discount on different dental services such as fillings, braces, routine examinations and cleaning. Patients are typically provided a 30% discount off the regular charges. In some cases, it may even be as high as 70%. However, for the discount program to be activated, the patients need to approach a dentist who is a member of a network of dentists providing discounts on their services.

I’ve just got back from a weekend in Pembrokeshire. Dennis, a friend from Bristol is getting married in a few weeks time so it was a stag weekend with a difference. Nothing too ’stag-like’ about it in fact and Dennis didn’t even want to call it a stag weekend, just a weekend away before the wedding.

We stayed at Caerfai Farm campsite which although fairly basic had nice views of the sea and all the amenities you need whilst camping, including toilets, showers and a little farm shop. It was also fairly quiet and there was plenty of room. We did manage to squeeze 9 tents onto one pitch though which seemed to confuse the campsite owners!

The weather was great and most people returned looking decidedly red thanks to too much time in the sun. As well as heading off to the pub each night, we sat around a campfire on the beach wandered around St. Davids and went for a swim in the sea. I also walked along the coast path a bit and found a geocache. The beach at Caerfai Bay is a small rocky cove with sand when the tide is out. The rocks around here are perfect for scrambling over and ‘coasteering’. The coast path is easily accessible from the campsite and as part of the Pembrokeshire National park offers amazing views and lovely coastal scenery. I didn’t walk far along the coast path but did explore the nearby St Non’s Chapel and walked around the deep inlet of Porth Clais.

All in all a nice weekend away and its about time we got our own tent and went camping with Morgan. if only we could guarantee nice weather all the time.

The Las Vegas real estate market is experiencing many problems.  There has been a marked increase in foreclosures around the area.  Las Vegas is among the leading cities in overall foreclosure rates.

Homebuilders are also bringing many new developments to the market, with many master planned communities currently under construction.

Many wonder when Las Vegas will recover.  However, if we compare the Las Vegas real estate market with other major markets around the western United States, it may not seem so bad.

The Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Nevada Las Vegas compared median prices for single family homes in Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Orange County.

The median price for a home in Las Vegas in the third quarter of 2006 was $320,000.  Salt Lake City?s median home price was $272,638, while buyers in Phoenix could expect to pay $277,074.

However, the case of California is quite different.  Los Angeles homes sell for an average $538,000 while in Orange County the median price is a whopping $700,000.

Las Vegas has traditionally attracted investors looking to cash in on short term gains during hot periods in the market.  When that market cools, many investors are unable to pay their loans and the homes are foreclosed.

While Las Vegas may be experiencing an increase in foreclosures, the city?s real estate market is still affordable when compared to other markets around the west.  Short term problems may not translate into a long term recession in Las Vegas.

Jace (at Gremly Girl) recently let me know of a change to Etsy's search that I wasn't aware of ... the new default Etsy search is for handmade items only:

etsy search bar

So if you search, say, "fauxlero" on Etsy, without changing the default to "Vintage" ... well, you wouldn't get much. Then you would believe there are no fake boleros on Etsy, and, considering how many fake-bolero links I've been sent in the past 24 hours, that's un-possible.

In order to make it worth your while to change the little drop-down in the search box from "handmade" to "vintage" (see below)

etsy search bar

a bunch of Etsy sellers have banded together to offer a special "Buried Treasure" promotion. They're offering 10% off through the end of May to Dressaday readers who put "dressaday" in the message to sellers. The site won't input the discount automatically, so buyers will get a revised Paypal invoice from the seller. (Some pattern sellers offer additional shipping and quantity discounts, which they'll combine with the dressaday discount.)

Here's the list of participating Etsy sellers, in alphabetical order:

Bamabelle -- vintage clothing
Enigma Vintage -- vintage clothing
Gremly Girl -- vintage patterns
Joules -- vintage clothing and patterns
Just Picked Vintage -- vintage patterns & notions
Pattern Mania -- vintage patterns
Pattern Shop -- vintage patterns
Pattern Stash -- vintage patterns
Sandritocat -- vintage patterns

I suggest you take advantage of the discount by perhaps snapping up something like this:

It'd be a shame to let those dresses languish, undiscovered and almost undiscoverable, just because Etsy changed their search ...

Once upon a time, outdoor living meant simply the pursuit of happiness within the warm embrace of nature and an afternoon spent pondering over the benefits of home grown weed. But these days, itâ??s all about keeping up with the Jones. So if you too like a little showing off, this swanky new Waterdesign Totem SHT FO 2000 outdoor shower system is something that certainly belongs in your backyard by the jazzy new Jacuzzi. Designed to resemble a high-end art piece, the water station can be fitted with a sink, mirror, towel holder, shower accessories and customized taps to make your neighbors heart burn with all the envy Satan can possibly bestow upon his tortured soul. The iroko wood anti-slip footboard and footstall almost add insult to injury while you catch him peeping over the fence and trying to stare holes into the stainless steel beauty that lets you have hot and cold water on demand.

Every good relationship starts with good communication.  Or at least it sounds good to say that but it may not be the case.  A recent research study performed by researchers at Indiana University, examined almost 300 undergraduates of both sexes to determine their ability to detect sexual interest.  They were shown 280 photographs of women and were asked if the expression on the woman’s face was friendly, sexually interested, or rejecting.

Oddly enough, men often mistook friendly for sexually interested and sexually interested as friendly.

What does this mean to us men?  It means that when that woman we are friends with is acting like she is into us, she probably isn’t.  I have a lot of female friends who get frustrated that all their guy friends want to suddenly date and get upset over the fact that they received ‘mixed signals’.  Yeah, no mixed signals, they were just being friendly.

More to the point, it is critical for a man who wants to enter the world of dating and have some sense of accomplishment to understand the nuances of body language.  Calling some elements of body language ‘nuance’ is a complete understatement.  The following is a quick guide to body language:

1. She is looking at you.  This isn’t foolproof.  If you are wearing antlers and dancing on the bar in a drunken rendition of the Electric Slide, she may be looking at you, but probably not in a good way.  Unless she jumps up on the bar with you, it is safe to assume she is gaping at the car accident.  What is key is the look, look away, and look again move.  What is difficult is catching this without staring at her.  She may then be looking up to look at you to see if you are still staring.

2. The laugh.  Did you just say something mildly funny?  Maybe you retold a witticism you heard from Jon Stewart, or retold that one story about that one time when you were in that one place and she laughed, not a soft “I’m supposed to insert laughter here” laugh but a genuine laugh?  Then she is digging you.

3. The questions.  Does she seem to ask a lot of different questions about you?  Unless she is trying to fill the silence with idle chatter and is asking you questions about whether you think it will rain or not, there is a good chance that she is into you.  Women who are interested want to know about you and will ask questions and actually listen to the answers.  How do you know this is happening?  The follow-up question.

4. The touch.  This is huge.  Does she find a reason to touch you?  Touch your hand, fix your collar, or just lean against you if possible?  This is the riskiest move she can make from her perspective - initiating contact, but is the most commonly confused by men.  The subtle pretense she used to initiate the touch is often thought of as valid by the man.  Adjusting a shirt collar?  It needed to be adjusted.  Being leaned against?  That other person needed to walk by and she was just making room.  The touch on the arm in the midst of a conversation?  She is trying to get your attention so she can say something or she is excited and doesn’t realize what she is doing.

There are countless number of books and websites devoted to interpreting body language.  After reading all of them, I’d still be an idiot about how to do it?  The fundamental factor involved here goes to the heart of a lot of dating issues:  fear of rejection.  The fear that the woman crawling over the table giving me that sexy look isn’t interested in me and if I make a move she’ll reject me will always be present.  Even if I am married to her.

As the study seemed to indicate, we have two options as men: assume every friendly woman wants us, or assume they don’t.  The option that seems safer to us indicates a lot about our personalities.

We were wrong….

We got an energy monitor earlier this week and it has made fairly interesting reading. We’ve never been frivolous with our energy usage and do generally switch off lights when they aren’t in use (although I’m better at that than Anna), and don’t leave the TV on standby etc. but having the monitor has made us that extra bit careful.

We thought we probably use a fair bit of electricity simply because ‘living at the end of the line’ means we don’t have gas so all of our cooking and heating comes from electricity. In addition my work as a freeelance web designer means I work from home so as well as having a computer, two monitors and various hard drives etc. running all day long I’m also making cups of coffee all the time and generally using electricity during the day.

On top of all that the weather station that I run is operational 24 hours a day. As well as the weather station console, it has its own dedicated computer, monitor and router which is on 24 hours a day uploading data to the internet at minute intervals.

So, we don’t know how much electricity most people use so have little to compare our usage against but it is interesting to see which appliances are the most power hungry. Every time we switch something off the monitor shws us how much energy (and money) we are saving. It has worked as we did go around the house seeing if there was anything we could turn off. The VCR was switched off completely as we very rarely use it. We left it on before as resetting the clock on it was a pain, but we never use it to record things anymore and it saves a few watts, so off it went.

My computer and its peripherals use about 200-250 watts whereas before I would leave it on if I was popping out for a short period of time I now tend to turn it off. I haven’t experimented with how much energy sending it to sleep saves yet.

There are of course certain things we can’t turn off. The fridge has to stay on, the smoke alarms have little lights on them so must use some electricity albeit a very small amount. The weather station computer stays on as does the digibox because resetting it takes a few minutes and it is often set to record various things. We may however put it on a timer plug so that it turns off between midnight and 6am as it is rare that we record things during those hours. The cooker stays on too simply because we use the clock on it to tell the time and Anna’s alarm clock is always on as well. Other than that, I think the only other things constantly drawing power is the doorbell (which has a little light on it) and ironically the energy monitor! All in all we manage to get our energy consumption down to just over 100 Watts at its base level and when we are in and using the TV, computer etc it is usually up around 500-600 watts.

As soon as we start cooking or using the tumble drier then it obviously soars. The microwave, kettle cooker and toaster can really get things going and so far I think we’ve managed to hit around 5Kw as a maximum. All interesting in a geeky way but it does help us do our little bit for the environment and probably more of an incentive to people, especially at the moment with rising fuel prices, helps us save some money too.

If we manage to save 15% our electricity supplier will give us £15. How much electricity do you use??

A while back a friend approached me to design some pieces for her upcoming wedding. This quickly turned from hairpins and traditional jewellery to a commission for ninety pairs of earrings as favours for the females guests.

It was a lovely idea, and a great way to offset the stubby holders (beer coolers for the non-Aussie linguists) that the boys were being gifted. The bride and I brainstormed, and agreed that she'd pay for the supplies and I'd gift the couple my labour.

We decided on a feminine palette of vintage pastels to match the beading and embroidery in her exquisite gold toned dress;

Favourearrings

(l-r) Blush pink, copper, sage, peach and violet. Each pair was replicated in gold (14k gold filled) and silver (sterling), with freshwater pearls and Swarovski crystals.

I also made custom gift bags for the earrings; Pashmina with a silk lining. This is where I went completely over the top! Not only is Pashmina a pain to cut and sew, inserting a lining into a bag this small is a complete folly. But they turned out so well:

Favourbags

Silver ribbon for the silver earrings, gold ribbon for the gold.

Favourpile

Favourbasket

Ready to go!

They were a great success at the wedding; guests loved them and they were a great icebreaker on the night with people swapping colours between themselves. I even was told that a lot of the guests were wearing them at the brunch the next morning (I missed the brunch as I was a little *ahem* "under the weather" after the previous night).

Would I do this again? For a friend at mates rates- in a heartbeat. But not as a money making exercise; the retail cost would make it prohibitive for almost any wedding. BUT it would be a lovely favour idea for the craft-inclined bride who wanted to tackle it themselves.

The should give you a bit of an appreciation of why I've been AWOL lately! My fingers needed some recovery time...

I just read this in a blog entry about 18-year-old Dutch model Cato van Ee: "At 5?9? with 33-23-35 measurements, pillowy lips, dark blonde hair and intriguing blue eyes, it wouldn?t surprise me if Cato is soon moving in the circle of highly versatile, ridiculously beautiful girls who are changing the face of modeling."

Uh... tall, skinny, blonde, blue-eyed... and she's 'changing the face of modeling'? HOW?

Between helping my Aunt put her anklets together I managed to complete one necklace. I bought the beads at a local store. I love the bright emerald colored glass beads. They look great with the the Tiger Eye round beads. I used sterling silver wire to create the crescent moon. I love it!

I'm off to San Francisco for Memorial Day weekend. I hope to be swept off my feet by a reincarnation of Jimmy Stewart under the Golden Gate Bridge while wearing a beautiful creation by Edith Head.

When Giorgio Armani began his Emporio Armani show two seasons ago with an ad for his fragrance, Diamonds, starring Beyoncé, the commercial interruption was diverting enough—after all, it was Beyoncé. The ad for the designer's branded Samsung phone that was screened before today's Emporio presentation? Less so. As for the bare-chested boys sporting enormous, (we're assuming) fake GA logo tattoos at the end of the show, they, too, were a distraction from a collection that had many strong points.

This is a season of easy, slouchy pants—a trend that Armani happens to have been perfecting for years. The leopard-print shorts worn over a trouser suit were a step too far, but there was nothing tricky about the washed-silk numbers that tapered elegantly to the ankle or ballooned above a deep cuff. Shorts with crossover waistbands also looked of the moment. In the jacket department, a cool, oversize tuxedo embroidered all over in crystals and a graceful ivory topper with a sculptural bow at the waist both stood out. The show's East-meets-West theme produced other jackets with mandarin collars, some of which were draped in multiple strands of beads and pearls. And vests turned up for both day and after dark, alternately topping long full skirts or narrow ones slit up the back. Things took a sweet turn when barefoot models strolled out in baby blue, pink, and yellow sequined gowns. Halter tops and ankle-scraping skirts in the same bejeweled tones were a more novel approach to evening, but they didn't have the same appeal as Armani's assured tailoring.
